CHAPTER FORTY TWO

Josef decided to clean up the living room, methodically scraping the plates into the trash, tossing the leftover milk down the drain, and putting everything into the dishwasher. He put some detergent into it, then put the pans from the stove in. After it was fully loaded, he started the wash cycle. He took a deep breath and walked down the hallway to the bedroom.

He stopped at the study, and reached up on the molding over the door for the key. He had to move it once Blair found it. He went inside, leaving the door open, and went over to the computer which was already on. He looked at the fish swimming on the screen saver for a long moment. I finally occurred to him that Blair must feel like those fish. Caught. What was she going to do? She probably knew better than he did, that there was no place for her in his life now. His shoulders slumped when he truly had to admit, that as much as he tried to fight it, he was going to have to let her go.

But that didn’t mean he had to let his child go. Maybe if he let her go, but asked her to stay in touch with him, he could come get the child when she had him. Most children who were interracial were pretty light. He’d just keep him out of the sun. What if she disappeared though?

Well, the United States was only so large. He’d put Buford and Rob on the case, if that happened. They could find a needle in a haystack. They had found every one of the 1000 people on their lists, dead or alive, free or in prison, they had found them. Now Tag was another story. He was much better with physical stuff. Just show him who to rub out, and he was ready!

Josef smiled to himself, as he moved the mouse to wake up the computer. He quickly dialed up his Internet account, and went to Circuit City. The computer had a matrix that kept his credit card information available, so he quickly ordered a television, debating over the size briefly. He settled on a 60 inch High Definition Digital Ready TV. It came with a free Recliner and Ottoman. He also ordered Direct TV, with installation. He typed the beginning of his address, and the computer filled in the rest. After he pressed the ‘BUY’ button, the screen flashed for an instant, before a message came up stating that the nearest Circuit City in his area would call to confirm the best time to deliver the products. He mumbled to himself, “Thank you for shopping Circuit City.”

He signed off of the computer without checking his E-Mail, and walked out of the study. He closed the door, and locked it with the key in his pocket, then put the key over the doorjamb again. He then turned to go into the bedroom. He turned the door handle, expecting it to be locked.
